  1. You do not want to do that. It is in South Houston. Where would you want to be walking around at? There really is not a lot of businesses around the airport.
  2. all airports have security,,that's not always affective huh!!so we all will probably say not always...
  3. NO... people have been killed there, including a police officer in the past year. Be careful, especially if you are a girl. Stay away from monroe street which is really close by
  4. there isnt anything appealing near hobby to walk around and do. there are some older neighborhoods but nothing worth while. rent a car if at all possible. avoid the bus as well. its slow and the 2 that i know of that go in that area also travel through some real ghetto parts of town
  5. Houston is not a walking town. Things are spaced very far apart and it's already hot. There is nothing special about the Hobby Airport part of town. The closest mall is below average shopping and the neighborhoods are not all that attractive. The best thing to do is to bring a book if you have a lay over or to people watch. If you have a very long lay over then, depending on the time of day, you can rent a car and perhaps go into the Museum District 15 miles closer into town. It doesn't sound like a long way, but in Houston rush hour traffic it's a long distance. Rush hours are from 6:00 AM - 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM through 7:oo PM.
  6. No, it really isn't and there is not much to see around there anyway. I would try to stay somewhere else and take their shuttle back to the airport.
  7. No! The closest mall, Greenspoint, has the nickname "Gunspoint". Take a taxi to Willowbrook Mall which is slightly further but MUCH nicer. There is really no place to walk to from Hobby, just gas stations, fast food places & conveniance stores.
  8. Um, Hobby Airport (for the poster above me), not Intercontinental. That being said, the Hobby Airport area is no great shakes either. My wife lived there back in the late 90s, and she and her friends got out as quickly as they could. Her description: It was a pit! EDIT for Mrs. Nolan, below: No, this is NOT common for Houston.
  9. we left out of hobby when i went to New York they had a nice hotel and near to the airport. i wasn't ever nervous about the area. they had bums on every corner but from what i hear thats normal for Houston. we went and didnt have a problem.
