Crazy Hobbies

Should you list your hobbies on a resume?

I've heard varying opinions on this. Say my hobbies are: sailing, art, photography, and martial arts.

  1. No. You resume should be short, sweet and right to the point. So helpful tips: http://www.resume-help.org/resume_writing_tips.htm
  2. Nope.
  3. Not unless it is REALLY pertinent to the job you are applying for. For instance, you are applying to be a security guard, your martial arts skills are pertinent, the fact that you sail is not.
  4. Not unless they are work related.
  5. ABSOLUTELY! Interviews are all about rapport. You will find that most people play at least one musical instrument or have their own hobbies. Chances are, the person interviewing you may also love music, etc, but wont' know what you have in common unless they see it mentioned on your resume. I always list my hobbies and list them in a funny way. Most people like someone with a good sense of humor. I put that I play trombone upside down on my resume. I can't tell you how many prospective employers loved that part of my resume and commented on it. One of them was a trombone player himself. Instant rapport. just to let you know, every job I've ever interviewed for I have received. I know what I'm talking about and I've studied the concepts behind creating rapport with others quickly. Good luck! And be proud of your interests outside of career. Those are what make you unique and HUMAN.
  6. Absolutely! But not if it extends your resume to another page or gives your resume a clutter look. The benefits of listing your hobbies are that it shows that you have depth and gives the interviewer a chance to learn more about you. Now during the interview, when asked about your hobbies tell why you like them. Ex: You like martial arts because it teaches you discipline, control, as well as a stress reliever. Be cautious of talking too much about your hobbies.
  7. Definietly no. Are your going to use your hobbies at your new work environment? I hope not. If a company hires you based on your hobbies, let us know on Yahoo answers because I am looking too.
