What makes people have strange hobbies?

I'm doing a speech on it and I need ideas on why people have strange hobbies. Anyone know?

3. Maybe because it means something to them. Here's one for you. When I was a kid, I used to look at old buildings, especially old mansion type houses, with their stained glass windows and ornate wood carving. I appreciated the artistry and craftsmanship that went into these old homes. Well, my dad had a friend that ran a wrecking company and we salvaged the fancy windows, doorknobs, bannisters, and such. These got sold to other people doing their houses over or restorations. It was a fun time, and I had a small collection of antique doorknobs as a rememberence of the fun times exploring these old houses.
