Why do people blog? As hobby (self-reading) or to gain readership thus making it a profitable activity?

- depends on the person. i would say just to get things out of their mind, sometimes writing things down help you understand them more.
- I think the reasons are many and varied. Some use it as a daily journal, some make money having ads, some post their jewelry and crafts to sell, one I know one who loves cats and posts cat pictures, I have mine on Stumble Upon as I can post a lot of pictures and graphics, make like interest friends, and they save all the SU things I liked so I can go back to them there.
- Maybe it's a combination of therapy and egomania, combined with a bit of writing ability (hopefully). I've never been one to keep a "real" diary... I'm not likely to ever read it myself, or be famous enough for it to be published after my death. So what's the point? An ONLINE diary, one that might possibly be a benefit to someone else that runs across it, whether it's of practical use or just a bit of entertainment to brighten up someone's day? That does have some appeal. Then there's the blog of a journey, whether it's physical travel, documenting a project, or a learning experience. When I learn new things (which is often, in the constantly changing world of technology), I like to write them down, not only for my own use, but fully expecting to have to TEACH what I'm learning, since I have an online classroom. Try it sometime... when you're learning a new subject, pretend like you're going to have to give a lecture on it. That really helps with retention of the material. But back to the question... SOME people blog for purely business reasons. These days, one of the major ways for a website to get a high ranking on the search engines is to have incoming links from other websites. So what companies are doing is paying "bloggers" to write about their products and services and link back to them. It's kind of mercenary, but not necessarily a bad thing IF the blog is informative and a positive reading experience in it's own right, not just "blogging spam".
