What neighborhood is closest to University of Houston's campus?

Hello Houstonians! I am thinking about moving to Houston, Texas to attend the University of Houston next year (2nd graduate degree in communication disorders). I do not want to live on campus, but near campus but I do not know what neighborhood(s) the campus is located in (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Houston_neighborhoods for reference). Please give me the correct name of the area and I'll give you 10 pts! from the directions from Hobby Airport 1. Follow the exit signs from airport to I-45 North 2. Stay on I-45 North 3. Exit Elgin-Lockwood Cullen (44a) 4. Turn Left on Elgin at the stoplight 5. Stay on Elgin as it curves to the right 6. Turn left into UH entrance #18 at the stoplight I can't post the map and no it doesn't list the neighborhood;) I'd like to be able to get around by bus/train/walking too! Thanks for your serious replies! wait...what? is the 3rd ward a good neighborhood or not? this is interesting. Anyone else have a take on the 3rd ward? anyone know what neighborhoods students usually live in that attend UH? can somebody give me more specific information on the best place(s) to live in Houston's 3rd ward or surrounding areas? I can afford up to $1,000 a month and I'd like to be reasonably safe. Thanks!

  1. The neighborhood around the University of Houston is called the Third Ward. It is mostly a very poor and high crime neighborhood. Most students live on campus or commute from other parts of the city.
  2. Well the University of Houston is located at the Third Ward. It is a nice neighborhood.
  3. U of H is located in 3rd ward. it is a older historically black neighborhood. but the campus is also surrounded by other neighborhoods. its also not far from midtown and the medical center. parts of 3rd ward are not high in crime like someone has said here. it really depends on where you are. all of houston is high in crime for that matter. it just depends on where you want to or can afford to live
  4. If you have that much to spend, I'd really not live in one of the wards. UH is just southeast of the Third Ward. Don't believe you have to be there. Hell, I lived in Westchase when I was going to U of H, and that was 18 miles. If I went back to UH (no, I'm not crazy enough to go for a doctorate), I certainly would not move out of Memorial.
