Crazy Hobbies

What are some low-cost, oddball hobbies?

I'm looking for some oddball hobbies for my fiance. He isn't into a lot of things, so I'm trying to help him to come up with some creative things to do. He works construction, so when he gets home, he just wants to chill or do some hobby work. He lives in a VERY small town right now, so there's not much to do besides drink, y'know? I'm all out of ideas, so...if you have some oddball ones, let 'er rip! And please, no Google links. Personal experience preferred.

  1. make it a hobby for him to do deep cleaning of the house
  2. He works in construction, so what about making something out of left-over construction materials. An example might be lawn furniture from plumbing pipe, or stools (foot, children's, bar). If he likes to draw or paint the top of the stool could be like a canvas. Wood carving ?
  3. Something to do while chilling in front of the tv after work... Well, how secure is he in his masculinity? My thoughts are crochet or knitting. Men made fishing nets using crochet for thousands of years so its not just a girl thing. That's an oddball thing that is very relaxing. If he is into Firefly and Serenity he can make his own Jane hat?!?!
  4. Well, if he's into sports, say baseball for instance, collecting cards is a good hobby. Wether you buy them at Wal-Mart or on eBay, you can generally find a good selection for cheap prices. The cards he obtains that he doesn't like he could in turn re-sell them at a thrift store or of course, the great marketplace of eBay.
  5. Let him cut up his old jeans into strips, sew together the ends, and roll into huge balls. When he gets several balls, take them to someone to weave into rag rugs. They last almost forever. He might like wood burning, or building bird houses and feeders, using twigs to make a log cabin.
  6. Let's see.......outdoors....small town.....ah! Gold Panning! It's relaxing, inexpensive to get into.
  7. Soap making...
  8. How about bobbin lace? He works in construction, so presumably he has some woodworking skills and could easily make a pillow and bobbins. That pretty much just leaves thread and pins for the other supplies. I know it's super girly, but it is pretty unusual. It's a hobby I'm working on picking up. It just seems freaking cool.
