Crazy Hobbies

hobbies and interests in a tiny bush town?

I moved last year from Brisbane to a tiny bush town and thought I could hack it, but I'm struggling. I have put on weight and go through stages of just feeling unhappy. I was addicted to ebay for a while, but that proved to be too expensive!! The town itself has very little in the way of hobby groups, so I'm looking for some ideas (the cheaper the better!!) to take up my spare time and hopefully gain some skills while I'm here. What can I do?

  1. Start up an Arts club. Include all arts and crafts and make it a place where you can all bring your particular craft and people can learn it or just do it together. There can be things like painting, sketching, collages, crochet and knitting, scrapbooking etc etc etc Make it age and sex open and you may find some treasures such as leathercrafting or quilting or embroidery or woodworking. You can meet at one place once a week or more or move from one members house to another each meeting. If you build it...they will come...slowly at first probably but eventually word will get out.
  2. Photography would be a good hobby for you. You can take your camera, tripod, and go for a walk-about at the same time. I bet you can find some amazing nature photos there. Or just chronicle the day to day life in a small town. Another idea would be to talk to the older people in town about their childhoods and histories and put together familiy and community histories. The older people would love the attention and you will hear some fantastic stories. You maybe could start a genealogy project for your local families. Does your town have a newspaper? If not, start a community newsletter. If so, volunteer to write an article for them.
