Crazy Hobbies

What is your favorite quiet spot?

Lately I've been making it somewhat of a hobby to find spots that are simply quiet and peaceful. They've become sort of my own spots. I've found two so far; an old wooden bridge in the middle of a field and the top of a nearby parking garage overlooking a radio tower that looks a lot like the Eiffle tower. My question is what are your spots that you go to to be alone or just simply to enjoy the quiet.

  1. I like to tunnel to the center of the earth.
  2. One of my favorite quite spots, where nobody will intrude, is Fabian Forest Preserve in Batavia, Illinois, on the east bank of the Fox River. One enters the park at the site of a huge windmill that was brought over from Holland before WWII. Between the windmill and the edge of the river is a small parking lot. The ideal way to enjoy the spot is to back into a parking space under the shade of an ancient elm, lower the tailgate of the pickup truck, toss some pillows into the bed of the truck, open a cooler that has been packed with lunch and some soft drinks, and settle in with a good book.
  3. A bluff located here in Missouri. Overlooks the big Mississippi. On my property. Have to either walk or ATV to it. Eagles all year around. Nice foliage in the fall. Wildlife abundant. Take a light lunch. Do some hiking. Helps keep things in perspective.
