Summary: surface, and then covered with another piece of wax paper and eight more paper towels. I then stacked a bunch of encyclopedias on top of the whole thing. Here's a shot of the book tower: You can see my messy work surface (a ping-pong table), as well as the stab/elevator having the boom mount being glued (more on this later).
